jasy jatere

Jasy Jatere is one of the seven legendary monsters in Guaraní mythology, the cursed children of Tau and Kerana. He is unique among the seven children in having a non-monstrous appearance, instead looking like either a small man or child with blonde hair and light eyes, even sometimes being described as beautiful or charming. His name means "small piece of the moon" and he is often depicted with a magic staff or wand. Jasy Jatere is seen as the lord of the siesta, protector of the yerba mate plant, and stories of him are intended to entertain children or keep them inside and asleep during siesta time. Stories range from playing games with children in the forest, only to transport them home safely, to luring them away to be fed to his man-eating siblings.
